I have had calls from clients this last week on Mexico.

I know with the news informing everyone of the crime in Mexico many will be concerned.
If you look at the map you can see where you are going to be. Yes there is crime in Mexico as it is here, but you will be nowhere near it. If you live along the border states you are closer to the Mexican Crime then you will be in the Cancun/Riviera Maya area.
Think of it this way…what if a family wanted to travel from Canada or even England to go to Disney Land but decided it was not safe because Phoenix is the crime capital of the U.S….that is the same scenario.
I know the last few weeks there was a murder on the river that separates the US from Mexico…and that has been in the news…it is terrible and personally I wouldn’t live on the border or even suggest my clients to visit border towns…As a matter of fact I have refused to book clients to Acapulco and Brownsville in the last 3 months just because of safety issues, which didn’t go over well with them and they booked elsewhere. But I just couldn’t with a clear conscience book them knowing the crime in those areas. I would never send anyone, anywhere that I wouldn’t feel safe going myself.
I just returned from Riviera Maya a few weeks ago and it was wonderful…except for the layover in Atlanta…whewwww had to race from one end to the other of the airport to get to my connecting flight.
I had a bride down at the Royal just a couple miles from the El Dorado when the news flashed that 6 people had been shot in a bar in Cancun…they had no idea of issues until they came back…But the 6 that were shot were not in Cancun…they were 75 miles inland going west in a small gathering of shacks that housed a bar…again to put that in perspective…a long way from the area that you will be in and no tourist would ever go even if they did go out on their own.
I do have to say that there was one murder in Cancun this last year…it was a vacationing American husband and wife…he killed his wife and hid her body but was arrested…he was one of those reality show stars from the past that wanted to get rid of his wife…that made the news last year.
Again please know that I get reports of any issues that happen in my specialized area of travel…Mexico, Caribbean, and the Pacific and research to find out the whole story to make sure that my clients aren’t affected. Another example…the H1N1 warning…I had clients cancel their trip to Riviera Maya and tried to explain that this was hyped up…some listened and went and came back glad they went…others canceled. Cancun and Riviera Maya only had 7 cases of swine flu and those were visitors from the states and inland Mexico … Again I wouldn’t have sent anyone to the areas that were under watch like Mexico City which was where most of the case in the entire country were…
I hope this will help put into perspective the way the media presents news…having the drug wars on the Mexican border and claiming that Mexico isn’t safe isn’t the whole truth.
But with any travel you have to be cautious…even here… I was coming home from the airport about midnight alone a few weeks back and got lost…ended up in Oakcliff…This is a place I wouldn’t go in the daytime let alone night…You have to be careful anytime you travel even if it is in your own back yard.
If you need to talk or get more info please give me a shout.
