Yoga for Weddings!
![]() I absolutely love yoga. I practice Ashtanga vinyasa, or power yoga, at Infinite Yoga several times a week, and it has completely changed my body and mental focus. I couldn't live without it!
Thus, I am very happy to bring you an exclusive interview with Lisa Helfer, founder of Yoga for Weddings, a fantastic company that uses the fitness, bonding, and de-stressing benefits of yoga to get you ready for your wedding day. Or, you can even have a complete yoga wedding! Read on ...
WedSpace: Why did you start this company?
Lisa: I taught a yoga class the morning of a friend's wedding before the day's preparation. It was a weekend destination wedding and many family members and close friends had traveled from all over the world to attend. The class had a very calming and ceremonious feeling from the start. It was a momentous day and everyone there was connected to the bride and groom in historical and unique ways. It also helped people with their jet lag and was an ice breaker for guests who hadn't previously met. The experience was such a good one for everyone, I decided to start a company for just that niche. WedSpace: How long have you been practicing yoga? Lisa: Since the age of 12. My Mom used to take me to meditation and yoga classes when I was younger. I then practiced vinyasa flow yoga more seriously in my 20s in New York at Jivamukti. It really became a great thing in my life, so I decided to do a teacher training at Synergy Yoga in Miami. I then did an Ashtanga training at Shiva Shala in New York City.
WedSpace: How can yoga help a bride de-stress and focus while planning her wedding? Lisa: Yoga is not only a fabulous way to get in shape, tone, lose weight, and make your skin glow — it has an overall life-enhancing result when practiced on a regular basis. There are proven physiological and therapeutic effects for those who practice yoga. Yoga poses, combined with meditation and breathing exercises, calm the mind; this actually helps a bride focus more clearly and reduces stress. Yogic breathing, which is the foundation for every yoga pose, enables the body to take in more oxygen. Because that's what keeps the body alive, you literally take in more energy when you practice yoga!
WedSpace: How does yoga help brides lose weight or get in shape? Lisa: Vinyasa flow yoga classes, which I recommend for losing weight or getting shape (sometimes known as power yoga) is a flowing series of poses that increase the heart rate. This type of yoga is vigorous and it builds muscles, because each pose addresses a different part of the body. It's a 5,000-year-old total-body workout that also is great for the body internally! Problem areas for brides are usually flabby underarms, the booty, legs, and abs and these are all addressed in a Vinyasa flow class.
Abdominal poses in yoga are especially beneficial to a bride, as they strengthen deep into the core of the body and sides of the waist — versus crunches, which only tone the surface muscles. These poses will actually straighten a bride's posture, so when she walks down the aisle she will appear taller!
WedSpace: What benefits does yoga offer a bride that regular exercise may not? Lisa: Yoga is hugely beneficial for a bride who is sick of the gym, has sustained an injury from an exercise like running, or simply feels like she needs a change in her exercise routine during the months leading up to her wedding. Private yoga classes are individually designed to address a bride's physical goals and the wellbeing of her mind. Regular exercise doesn’t help balance a bride's emotional state, which is vital, because a wedding is such an important passage in a woman's life and usually a huge transition.
Yoga will help her understand herself during the process from a philosophical and emotional perspective. When a bride works with a certified yoga teacher, she has the room for emotions to surface during the yoga practice and then learn to breathe and move through them so that she can be more present on her wedding day and in her marriage. It's great for family members and grooms too. :)
WedSpace:Describe what a "yoga wedding" might look and feel like? Lisa: A yoga wedding can be that in its entirety, which means it could be held on mats and include a physical practice and yoga-themes for the ceremony, such as passages from yogic texts, meditation, visualization, maybe some chants, yoga-themed rituals, and live or recorded Indian music such as sitar and tabla. Or, if it's a traditional-style wedding, you can incorporate a few aspects of the aforementioned into the ceremony. Either way, there are many participatory places in the ceremony for family members and friends.
WedSpace: What would a yoga bride wear? Lisa: It depends on what type of ceremony she and her fiancé would like. A more physical yoga wedding where all the guests participate on mats would be more informal and the bride could wear white yoga clothes. Lucy, Prana, Lululemon, and Lotus Blossom Style all carry white yoga clothes. A loose, white dress could also work — or sometimes people opt to wear traditional Indian wedding garb. Alternatively, for a traditional wedding ceremony that includes yoga-themes such as passages from yogic texts, maybe some chants, yoga-themed rituals, Indian music, etc. a bride could wear a traditional wedding dress or something that she feels comfortable in.
WedSpace:Does someone need yoga experience? Do you offer classes for all levels? Lisa: Nope. All levels are welcome and in fact many of my clients have never even stepped on a yoga mat before. Yoga for Weddings offers classes for absolute beginners to very experienced practitioners.
WedSpace: Describe the packages you offer.
Lisa: Brides, grooms and family members can choose from any of the Yoga for Weddings Classes to design their event package: Wedding Planning Stage Yoga Classes: Bride, Groom, Bride & Groom, Parents, In-Laws, Siblings, Groom & Dad, Bride & Mom, Bride & Sibling, Groom & Mom, and Family. Day/Week of the Actual Wedding Event Classes: Bride, Groom, Bride & Groom, Parents, In-Laws, Bridal Party, Bachelorette Party, Siblings, Groom & Dad, Bride & Mom, Bride & Siblings, Groom & Mom, Family, Wedding Guests, and Kiddie. After the Wedding is Over Yoga Classes: Post-Honeymoon Maintenance Package, Nuptial Renewal, Anniversary
WedSpace: What is your favorite thing about yoga for weddings, in one sentence? Lisa: Yoga and weddings are so complementary. Yoga literally means "to yoke" or to "connect with the divine self," so what a perfect practice to include in a wedding which is the yoking of two lives and hearts.
