Awe-inspiring ... W. Scott Chester shot this gorgeous wedding at the Atlanta History Center.

You can book the Grand Ballroom, various breathtaking gardens, 1840s historic farmhouse, or Swan House mansion.

To die for.

I might have squealed when I went to one of my favorite blog reads, Green Wedding Shoes, and saw a brand-new wedding at Treehouse Point outside Seattle, the coolest venue ever! Seriously, what girl (or boy) doesn't love a treehouse?

This venue and its surrounding forest, running streams, and lush plants is so incredible that you won't need much by way of florals or decor, but check out the pretty details that Kelli & Toby included to create a perfect woodland wonderland for their intimate wedding. {All photos by Brookelyn Photography}

I adore the simple, beautiful streamers.

So lush!

The main treehouse ... it's a dream.

Just had to showcase her pink and gray bouquet ... so gorgeous.

I love this shot of the couple peeking around the corners at each other! Like being a kid ... in a treehouse!

Eucalyptus Lane is a beautiful Ventura, California venue for a rustic, barn wedding (my favorite!) ... sadly, they are no longer open to the public. *Tear*

Amber & Jeremy have the distinction of being the last couple to have a wedding at this special location with all its natural beauty. The lighting in the barn, the old piano, the hanging bouquets, the lush trees ... you can see why this wedding was so beautiful, and why Eucalyptus Lane will be missed in the industry.

Enjoy! {Shot by Halberg Photographers}

I adore backyard weddings ... they are so personal and really tell guests something about the couple. If you have a smaller guest list, a wedding at your own home, your parents’ home, a summer home, or a close friend’s home can be intimate, beautiful, and meaningful. However, a backyard wedding can also require more rentals, planning, and money than a wedding at a venue that packages every aspect for you. Here’s what to consider:

Rentals

While you won’t have the fee for renting a venue, you will have to plan, organize, and pay for all vendors, personnel, and equipment -- including caterers, servers, tables and chairs, linens, musical entertainment, dance floor, decorations, lighting, etc. Just be aware that you won’t be saving money or time on planning, renting, and setup.

Parking & Valet

Parking may be an issue at your home. You don’t want to inconvenience your entire neighborhood by having your guests’ cars line the streets. Hire a valet service or arrange to have guests park at a nearby school, community center or church and shuttle them up to the house in a rented van. If you go the valet route, you’ll want to cover all fees ahead of time so your guests don’t have to dig for dollars for tips.

Weather

Don’t have an outdoor wedding at home without backup rain protection. Rent a tent, with tie-downs for wind, to cover the entire celebration. Also, if you suspect it may rain, have a few inexpensive umbrellas on-hand to let guests get from the tent to the house or out to their cars without getting soaked.

For warm-weather weddings at home, you should put out handheld fans or parasols for guests to shade themselves from the sun. Offer sunscreen for your guests (the bride and groom should remember the wear it, too). You might also consider a basket of inexpensive rubber flip-flops for guests to switch out their heels for dancing and walking on the soft ground.

Neighbors & Noise Ordinances

Be sure and let your neighbors know you are hosting a wedding at your home, and on what day and time. For one, you want to make sure they aren’t having a raucous pool party or mowing the lawn during your ceremony and reception. Also, if they have noisy pets, you should politely ask them to keep the dogs indoors during your vows. More important, perhaps, is that you don’t want to police crashing your wedding because the DJ is disrupting your neighbors. If there is a neighbor you think may be put out by music and chatty guests, invite that person over for dancing during the reception and he or she will be less likely to complain.

Bugs, Heaters & Bathrooms

Three aspects of hosting an outdoor wedding at home you should consider: Is it mosquito season? Are your guests going to be chilly when the sun goes down? Do you want guests in the house to use the restroom? You want to be sure your guests are comfortable, so set out citronella candles and spray to ward off bugs, rent several gas heaters if the temperature may drop below 65 degrees, and get a Port-o-Potty if you don’t have sufficient bathrooms or would prefer guests not trek in and out of the home.

Civil Ceremonies Only

Note that for an at-home wedding, you won’t be able to have a religious ceremony, only a civil ceremony, as religious events must be held in a religious center.

Insurance

You want to be sure you’re covered in the event that a guest gets injured at your backyard wedding. Your homeowners insurance may already provide enough coverage for your wedding, but you should contact your provider to be absolutely sure. If you need additional coverage, you can purchase a liability policy from a wedding insurance provider, which is similar to what many venues have. These policies cost about 1 to 2% of the amount of coverage -- for example, a plan that provides $25,000 in coverage should run about $300.

Clean-Up

After the wedding, who is going to clean up, wash dishes, take out trash bags, etc.? If you have many rentals items, you will be paying for those vendors to set up, tear down and remove things like tables and chairs, but there will still be much to clean up. You should hire a cleaning service, or you might consider paying a few neighborhood kids or teenage family members to help the hosts take out trash and get their home spotless again.

This is one of my most favorite weddings of all time ... designed by the incredible Beth Helmstetter. It's backyard wedding bliss ... although it doesn't hurt to have a backyard this beautiful!

I had dinner at L'Auberge Del Mar last night and the whole time my mind was just working and working ... from the crackling fire pit to the sexy cabanas to the awesome ocean views to the in-ground dance floor space, I was imaging an intimate seaside wedding the whole time I was enjoying my salmon. The resort recently underwent a $26 million renovation and the results are fabulous -- hip, chic, and cozy (somehow!) all at once. Did I mention that the ocean is a block away?!

Be forewarned that L'Auberge Del Mar is for smaller weddings and will cost a pretty penny; however, if this venue is in your budget, the accommodations and style can't be beat, and it's right in the heart of downtown Del Mar, steps from awesome nightspots and exquisite dining for all your guests to enjoy. And the beach! (OK, enough, sorry.)

Sample Wedding Menus

Designed by Executive Chef Paul McCabe and Executive Sous Chef Ramon Garcia, the new wedding menus are created from the freshest ingredients in Southern California.

The Ocean Song Menu provides first course options including mixed California field greens with sliced tomatoes, carrot curls and cucumbers and a choice of balsamic vinaigrette or creamy champagne dressing; or a traditional Caesar salad with herbed croutons and parmesan cheese. Ocean Song entree selections include pan-seared Mahi Mahi accompanied by a warm shrimp and scallop salsa, served with a lemongrass beurre blanc sauce and herbed wild rice; garlic rubbed pork tenderloin with herb roasted new potatoes and a port reduction; organic Scottish salmon with a lentil vinaigrette, vegetable melange and a radish salad; or oven roasted breast of chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and a rosemary-Dijon sauce. To complete the Ocean Song feast, dessert options will include a choice of chocolate dipped strawberries; chilled sorbet or gelato; or a seasonal fruit crisp. The cost for the Ocean Song Menu option is $140 per person, plus tax.

The Pacific Dream Menu offers a variety of light salads to start off the evening, including mixed greens with caramelized walnuts, tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots with a basil shallot vinaigrette; or baby spinach salad with mushrooms, pine nuts, carrots in an Asian poppy seed vinaigrette. Noteworthy entrees include pesto crusted sea bass, served with wild rice and a red pepper coulis; grilled filet of beef with potatoes dauphinoise and a peppercorn armagnac sauce; or chicken with prawns and tropical fruit salsa, served with lemongrass jasmine rice and a champagne beurre blanc sauce. Simple desserts complete the meal, including chocolate dipped strawberries; individual chocolate souffle cakes with sauce anglaise; or chilled sorbet or gelato. The Pacific Dream Menu starts at $150 per person, plus tax.

Leading off with a Chef's selection of amuse bouche, the Seaside Paradise Menu features decadent first courses such as lobster cappuccino, with fresh lobster and tarragon foam; baby greens with toasted pine nuts, dried cranberries, organic goat cheese and an aged sherry vinaigrette; or seared diver scallops with a caramelized onion risotto, wild mushrooms and a Madeira reduction. Divine entree options include rack of Colorado lamb with goat cheese gratin and a spiced pepper jam; sauteed John Dory with fennel, artichoke and preserved lemon in a saffron mussel jus; or grilled petite fillet with whole grain mustard sauce and pesto crusted sea bass with sweet pepper coulis and garlic mashed potatoes. Delectable dessert choices with the Seaside Paradise Menu include chocolate dipped strawberries; raspberry creme brulee with white chocolate curls; or chilled sorbet or gelato. With L'Auberge Del Mar's Sunset Soire Menu, diners receive four exquisite courses. First course choices are Dungeness crab with shaved Basque cheese, petite arugula and green peppercorn vinaigrette, or a Tuscan white bean soup with wild mushroom ravioli, truffles and fried leeks. For the second course, options include mixed greens with caramelized walnuts, tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots with basil shallot vinaigrette or baby spinach salad with mushrooms, pine nuts, carrots and Asian poppy seed vinaigrette. Over-the-top entre selections are petite filet mignon with wild mushroom sauce and a rock lobster tail with a roasted red pepper coulis and red rose potatoes, or grilled veal chop in a truffle, Madeira reduction and jumbo white prawns in a caviar beurre blanc sauce, accompanied by a wild mushroom risotto cake. As with every other package option, dessert options are always fantastic with the Sunset Soire Menu offering a sampler with vanilla creme brule, a chocolate dipped strawberry and chocolate souffle cake, or a tasting of house-made chocolate truffles. The price for the four-course Sunset Soire is $175 per person, plus tax.

The Coastal Dinner Buffet exceeds expectations with a variety of dishes, ranging from classic and simple, to luxurious and ornate. With soups like California cioppino, a cheese-and-meat antipasto, a light salad, as well as entrees such as roasted Australian lobster tail, a filet mignon carving station and various delightful accompaniments, the Coastal Dinner Buffet sets a new standard for wedding buffets. The Coastal Dinner Buffet starts at $190 per person, plus tax.

For each of the menus listed above, couples select one salad, up to two entrees and one dessert. Hosted bar service is provided for one hour for every wedding and includes select liquor, beer, wine and soft drinks. A choice of three delightful butler-passed hors d?oeuvres are included in every wedding reception, offering options such as goat cheese crostini with sun-dried tomato; artichoke beignet with lemon oregano aioli; shrimp escabeche with pickled onion and avocado; beef carpaccio with virgin olive oil and onion marmalade, and many more. Each wedding guest is also offered a complimentary glass of wine for dinner and champagne for the wedding toast. Beyond the options available, L'Auberge Del Mar can also produce a customized menu to suit the needs of even the most discerning couple.
