Dream Wedding at Down to Earth Prices

Utilize Local Resources to Reduce Big Budget Expenses

The staggering cost of having a wedding in San Diego County can be quite daunting to a couple planning the day of their dreams. Did you know that you can still have the event you envisioned without maxing out your credit cards? The key is creating a reasonable wedding budget, identifying what you can afford to spend, deciding what matters to you the most and allocating your dollars accordingly. Following are some budget tips to help you have a great wedding day, even on a shoestring budget.

Find a low-cost location
Schedule the event earlier in the day
Plan for the “off-season”
Use seasonal flowers that are locally available
Decorate strategically – focus on the highly visible areas and don’t sweat the small stuff
Put your friends and family to work

Reduce your guest list

No matter your budget, you can still have a great wedding day. Creating (and sticking to) a budget and applying these simple cost-cutting tips can help you accomplish your goal.

Perhaps the most important tip is to find a low-cost location. Since approximately 50 percent of your wedding budget will go towards the reception, it is worth putting some leg work into finding an affordable wedding and/or reception site. An often overlooked wedding event location option is government-owned parks, gardens and historic buildings. Because San Diego is ranked as one of the top ten best cities in the nation for corporate and leisure travel alike, these local government resources are often a perfect alternative to the high-demand, high-cost tourist locations.

The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation offers refreshingly affordable wedding ceremony and reception sites without discounting the beautiful backdrop only nature can provide. They offer a variety of natural settings throughout the County including open meadows, ancient wedding trees, Victorian gardens, historic ranch houses, hidden knolls and gazebos. Several indoor locations are also offered from a historic temple to a spacious reception hall overlooking a scenic lake. Whether your special celebration will be formal or informal, an intimate gathering or gala affair, summer or winter, there’s a low cost option available through your local government agency. The County of San Diego offers some sites for as little as $100 and other parks with additional amenities can range up to $1,000, still a very affordable location fee in southern California.

Don’t let budget restrictions stand in the way of having the wedding day of your dreams. Establish a budget, work within that framework and apply these cost saving tips and your special day can be just a few dollars away.

January is bridal show month.  Bridal shows offer a one stop shopping experience where you can meet dozens of wedding professionals face to face and talk about your wedding needs.  This allows your to get a feel for each company - do they have the personality that compliments yours, are they friendly, detailed oriented or do you find that their personality doesn't mix with yours or you feel pushed?  Always meet with a wedding professional before signing that contract. Bridal shows are great resource to have many mini meetings to either book their services on the spot or make an appointment for a longer more personal meeting.  Also, at bridal shows, most vendors offer a special discount for booking that day or within a short time of the show.  These offers can save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars.  Who doesn't want a deal?

Since January is a busy bridal show month, you will need to choose one or all of the local shows to attend.  First find out how much admissions is, is parking included or additional, will there be fashion shows, how many vendors (remember bigger isn't always better), are there special prize giveaways, can you purchase discounted tickets in advance, etc?  Most bridal shows will all this information and more on their websites.  When in doubt, call or email the company your questions.

Ok, you have now decided that you want to attend a bridal show.  What should you do to make things easier on you?
1.  Wear comfortable shoes, you will be doing a lot of walking.

2.  Print labels of your information (your name, grooms name, wedding date, address, phone number and email address).  This will help you enter drawings and give your information quickly to vendors.

3.  Create an email specifically for your wedding.  This way you will only receive information in that account from booked companies and potential services.  Once your wedding is over, you can delete your account and not be bothered.

4.  Bring all decision makers to the bridal show.  Many companies offer a special if you book the day of the bridal show, you will want all those involved (and paying) with the wedding.  Bring your parents if they are paying for most of the wedding.

5.  Be ready to spend about 3+ hours at a show.  You will want to visit with vendors and watch the fashion show.  Many shows are located in hotels and resorts that offer food or restaurants.  Stop and eat lunch.  It is a great way to think about your wedding needs before visiting more vendors.

6.  Cameras - many shows prohibit the use of cameras and videos.  Not only is this to protect their creative license, but to protect the designers in fashion shows.  Be be aware of this policy.

7.  Have fun!!  Take your time and enjoy the vendors, food samples, fashion shows and the excitement of your wedding!

Want an Oscar-worthy wedding video? Just follow these steps:

Before they hit the big screen, all movies go through a certain process: the budgeting, the crew-hiring, the equipment selection, the shooting, the editing. The same holds true for your wedding video. Though it's not a Hollywood blockbuster, your big-day film will undoubtedly make it onto your own personal top-ten list.

So make sure it's created with the same attention to detail as a multiplex masterpiece.
Couples are often tempted to enlist a friend or relative with a camcorder to tape their wedding. While an amateur video is better than no video at all, it's usually way below the quality that a professional can deliver. "Just because someone has a kitchen doesn't mean they can bake a wedding cake," Rudy Childs, president of the Professional Videographers Association of Greater Washington, D.C. (PVA), points out. If you'd like a professional-looking video, you're going to have to go with a pro.

Act One: the Search
To find a videographer, start by asking friends and family for recommendations. You can also contact a professional videographers' organization, such as a local PVA (check the list of locales at videographer.com/local_PVAs.htm) or the Wedding and Event Videographers Association International (online at weva.com). And don't forget to search Brides.com's Local Services section.

After you've identified a few candidates, meet with them in person so you can see examples of their work. Roy Chapman, chair of WEVA International, recommends that you take a look at a full-length wedding video in addition to demo tapes. "Trust your eyes and your ears" when selecting a videographer, Chapman advises. "If you don't like the look or the sound of a video you're being shown, or if you are bored watching it, that's not the fault of the wedding. It's up to the videographer to produce a high-quality video that's entertaining to watch."

Act Two: the Selection
Make sure you ask questions about the videographer's professional background (such as the number of weddings they've shot and any special training they've received). According to Kit Slitor, founder of the PVA, the most important thing to look for when choosing a videographer is experience: "A seasoned professional will be technically and artistically proficient. He will know how to gather the right footage, how to properly frame and focus shots, how to discreetly and properly light a scene and take care of audio considerations."

Since videographic technology is changing quickly, find out if the person is up to speed with the latest equipment and techniques. "The best format to tape with today is digital video," Slitor says. Videos recorded digitally can be transferred to a VHS tape or to a DVD, an increasingly popular option. DVDs make it much easier to edit the video, meaning your pro can, according to Chapman, "manipulate images, rearrange scenes, add tasteful special effects, change colors or backgrounds, and improve picture quality."
Chapman suggests that you also ask how many cameras the videographer will use. "This comes down to budget, but it's really preferable to have at least two cameras; you're limited with one." (Chapman also recommends checking with your clergy member to be sure that at least one camera will be allowed up front in the altar area.) Also, find out how the videographer records sound. A new audio advancement is tiny, wireless microphones that "can be clipped to a lapel and that are almost invisible. This lets you have nice, clear, uninterrupted sound."

Learn what type of editing the videographer uses. Chapman explains: "Some videographers use in-camera editing (which is basically just the footage as it was shot, with little or no editing afterward), which is the least costly but most limited method of editing. Others may spend up to 20 hours editing your video and making it television-quality."

When it comes to video style, you've got a range of options. The "love story production" or the "relationship segment" is increasingly popular. "These videos are the story behind the story, how the couple came together. It's important family history," Chapman says. "Sometimes these segments are produced in the relaxed style of A&E's Biography or a high-energy TV special. The videographer might take the couple to some of their favorite spots, interview them about their relationship, or get reactions from friends and family. On the wedding video, the love story segment usually appears as a prelude to the actual ceremony."

Another emerging trend is videos shot in an MTV, music-video style.
How to make a good style match? "Tell the videographer what your television viewing preferences are," Chapman advises.

Finally, if you're dealing with a videography studio, be sure to indicate in your contract the specific person you want to shoot your wedding. Often, studios will employ more than one videographer, and it's important to make it clear which one you want to work with.

Act Three: the Wedding Day
You can make the videographer's experience a little easier by supplying a schedule of the day's events. Be sure to introduce the videographer to the key players in your wedding—for example, your parents—to ensure that these VIPs are featured appropriately. You might want to pay extra to have the videographer shoot the rehearsal dinner. This will familiarize him or her with your ceremony and allow for prenuptial mingling with the important folks.

And remember: Your videographer needs to eat! Supply a meal—and if there are assistants, feed them too.

Post-Production: the Final Cut
Some wedding videos take months to complete, so when you sign your contract, make sure you get an idea of when you can expect to see the finished product. And find out exactly what you'll get: Discuss with your videographer whether you will receive just an edited copy of the wedding video, or if you will also receive the raw footage, i.e., all the material that was shot over the course of the day. Some videographers include the raw footage, some don't. If you have a preference, hire accordingly.

Once your video's in, make a party of it: Invite over the video's stars, whip up some popcorn, and wait for the applause for your big film debut.

1. Set a budget for your wedding.

2. Schedule an initial face-to-face consultation with a wedding coordinator.

3. Expect prompt responses to your phone and e-mail inquiries.

4. Ensure the consultant’s availability on your wedding date.

5. You should feel a good personal connection with your wedding coordinator. Be sure the coordinator understands and expresses interest in your vision for your wedding day.

6. Request to see photos or letters of reference from previous clients.

7. Decide on the level of service you will require from a wedding coordinator.

8. Interview wedding coordinators who have fees that fit into your budget.

9. Consider interviewing more than one wedding consultant.

10. Ask how long the coordinator has been in business; experience is important.

11. Ask how many coordinators will be on hand on your wedding day…one, two? Many consultants base their staffing on the number of guests attending the wedding.

12. Ask how many weddings the coordinator does each month. More than two may indicate that you will not be given the personal attention for which you have paid.

13. A member of a professional wedding association should have a great network of wedding vendors to recommend and are more likely to participate in professional development courses which keep them in tune with the latest wedding trends and etiquette.

Hiring a wedding coordinator should be an essential. Just as you will search for and purchase the perfect gown for your big day; the same logic should apply to hiring a coordinator. Coordinators with professional training and experience can make your wedding day worry-free and enjoyable for you, your family and your guests.

12 Great Honeymoon Tips:

1. Your honeymoon is an important event, always use a travel agent who specializes in honeymoons and destination weddings. Professional travel agents are knowledgeable and will help you plan your dream vacation.

2. Ask away! Be specific. Ask questions about the hotel or resort, the room, your flight. Don’t leave anything to chance.

3. Set a budget for your honeymoon just like you would for your wedding. Determine how much you want to spend on hotel, transportation (airfare, car, or taxi), meals, entertainment and shopping! When you set a budget and put it in writing, the chances that you will stay within your budget and not over spend are much better!

4. If you can avoid it, don't book your flight for early the next morning after the wedding, particularly if you're planning an evening reception. Once you finally get to sleep, it may be hard to wake up at 5:00am for that early morning flight or worse you may not even hear the alarm!

5. Splurge a little, it’s your honeymoon! Do something special that you wouldn’t normally do on a regular vacation. Spend a little extra for a room upgrade, or the honeymoon suite! Plan a romantic dinner at a gourmet restaurant or go on a sunset cruise. Go on a few excursions or tours.

6. When packing for your honeymoon, think about packing some romantic items like candles, massage oil and some new lingerie.

7. Give yourself plenty of time to pack. Make a list of all the items that you'll need. Anything that you forget, such as suntan lotion, aspirin, toothpaste will always cost more to purchase at your destination.

8. International travel requires you to show a current US Passport with an expiration date of at least 6 months after your travel date. International is any destination outside the Continental US, Alaska and Hawaii. It is important to purchase your airline tickets and travel documents with your maiden name in order to match your photo ID, license or passport.

9. When making reservations for your honeymoon, let your hotel, resort or cruise line know that you are "newlyweds". You'll likely receive lots of special treatment like free champagne, breakfast in bed, a "goodie basket" or even the honeymoon suite!

10. Travel insurance is always a good idea to cover in the case of a sickness or death in the family. Be sure that your contract also covers failure or a default by the tour operator.

11. If you are looking to save money on a vacation, in most cases an all-inclusive package will be the best value. It is one price that usually includes your airfare, hotel accommodations, food, drink (including alcoholic beverages) and some water sports (i.e. snorkeling, sailing).

12. Honeymoon Registry is a great alternative to the traditional wedding registry. Family and guests can apply money directly to your honeymoon or purchase activities.
